Seti ya nyayo za visukuku zilizohifadhiwa nchini Kenya kwa miaka milioni 1.4 inaandika upya kile wanasayansi walidhani wanajua kuhusu mmoja wa jamaa wa kale wa binadamu - kuhusu ukubwa wake na jinsi alivyoishi.
Nyayo hizo ziligunduliwa katika Muundo wa Koobi Fora karibu na Ziwa Turkana na zina umri wa takriban miaka milioni 1.43. Zinanasa wakati mmoja uliogandishwa katika muda: angalau watu wanane wa Paranthropus boisei, spishi ya hominin iliyotoweka inayojulikana kwa taya na meno yake makubwa, wakitembea pamoja juu ya ardhi yenye unyevunyevu muda mfupi kabla uso kuwa mgumu na kufunga nyayo zao mahali.
Ugunduzi wa kushangaza zaidi ni ukubwa. Kulingana na kina na nafasi kati ya nyayo, watafiti wanakadiria kuwa baadhi ya watu walikuwa na urefu wa hadi mita 1.8 na uzito wa kilogramu 75 hivi - kubwa zaidi kwa kiasi kikubwa kuliko makadirio ya awali, ambayo yalitegemea mifupa michache adimu ya visukuku na yaliyokuwa yameweka spishi hiyo kama ndogo zaidi na yenye umbo linalofanana zaidi na tumbili.

Mifupa ya visukuku inaweza kuwaambia wanasayansi mengi kuhusu maumbile ya mwili, lakini mara chache hufichua tabia - nyayo ni miongoni mwa aina chache za ushahidi zinazonasa wakati wa shughuli halisi, badala ya mabaki ya kimwili tu. Utafiti huo, uliochapishwa katika jarida la Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences na kuongozwa na timu kutoka Chuo Kikuu cha Chatham na Taasisi ya Max Planck ya Anthropolojia ya Mageuzi, unaongeza Paranthropus boisei kwenye orodha fupi ya spishi za kale za hominin ambapo "tabia" iliyogeuka kuwa visukuku - si mifupa tu - imesalia kusomwa.
