Kwa mujibu wa Wizara ya Hazina, Marekani imeondoa vikwazo dhidi ya chama tawala cha Eritrea na jeshi lake, baada ya hali ya dharura ya kitaifa iliyotangazwa Septemba 2021 kumalizika Septemba 18, 2026 bila kuongezwa muda. Vikwazo vya awali viliwekwa na utawala wa Biden kutokana na wasiwasi wa kibinadamu na haki za binadamu vilivyohusiana na mzozo katika eneo la Tigray, kaskazini mwa Ethiopia, ambapo majeshi ya Eritrea yaliunga mkono askari wa Ethiopia dhidi ya wapiganaji waliokuwa waaminifu kwa serikali ya mkoa wa Tigray. Mzozo huo ulimalizika kwa mkataba wa amani uliosainiwa Novemba 2022.
Ofisi ya Udhibiti wa Mali za Kigeni ya Hazina ilisema imeondoa vikwazo kwa watu kadhaa, akiwemo Hagos Ghebrehiwet, afisa mkuu wa fedha wa Eritrea aliyekuwa ameorodheshwa katika mpango huo. Wizara ya Mambo ya Nje ilieleza kuwa utawala wa Trump uliamua kutorefusha hatua hiyo ya dharura ili kuendeleza maslahi mapana ya Marekani katika eneo la Bahari Nyekundu, ambako wasiwasi wa usalama umeongezeka.
Hatua hiyo inakuja huku kukiwa na wasiwasi unaoongezeka Washington kuhusu usalama wa njia za usafirishaji kupitia mlangobahari wa Bab al-Mandeb, huku majeshi ya Houthi nchini Yemen jirani yakiwa yamepanua udhibiti wao juu ya pwani ya magharibi ya nchi hiyo. Pwani ya Eritrea kwenye Bahari Nyekundu, ikiwemo bandari ya Assab, iko karibu na eneo hilo la kimkakati, jambo lililoongeza uzito kwa uamuzi wa kulegeza vikwazo dhidi ya serikali ya Asmara.
