President Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend to press a new US proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, according to Russian state news agency TASS and confirmed by Trump himself. The two men are expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday, September 5, before traveling to Kyiv on Sunday, September 6, for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The trip marks the first time the envoy team has visited Ukraine directly since the war began, a notable shift after months of shuttle diplomacy conducted largely from Washington and Moscow. "They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," Trump told reporters when asked about the trip, without detailing its contents.

The diplomatic push still faces the same obstacles that have stalled previous rounds of talks. Russia continues to insist that Ukraine cede the entirety of four regions Moscow claims to have annexed and abandon its bid for NATO membership. Kyiv has rejected both demands, arguing that surrendering territory defended at enormous cost during years of fighting would amount to capitulation rather than peace.
