Fears of Serial Killer Grow in South Africa After Nine Women Found Dead Near Johannesburg

The bodies of nine women have been found in various communities across the Ekurhuleni municipality near Johannesburg over the past two months, South African police said, prompting fears that a serial killer may be responsible. The victims, mostly women in their twenties and thirties, were discovered in locations including Kempton Park, Pomona, Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield, KwaThema and Dawn Park, many of them found partially clothed with similar signs of trauma.

Investigators have not confirmed whether the killings were carried out by the same person or group, but say similarities among the victims and the circumstances of their deaths warrant a coordinated investigation. Authorities have offered a reward of 400,000 rand, about 25,000 dollars, for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said no effort would be spared in the investigation, and the case has galvanized public outrage across South Africa. Protests and memorial runs were held in several cities this week, with demonstrators calling for greater protection for women and faster progress in identifying the perpetrator or perpetrators.
